Chronic mouth breathing, however, has negative effects on facial and dental development, especially for children. The Journal of Oral Rehabilitation recently published a study on how sleeping with your mouth open can be bad for your teeth – even worse than fizzy beverages.
If you are a frequent mouth breather and you’re wearing braces, chances are you’ll have to wear them for a longer period because the spaces between your teeth will be harder to close. Plus, it will compromise the stability of the alignment of your teeth once you remove your braces, causing an orthodontic relapse.
For children who keep their mouths open when they breathe or sleep, they are more likely to develop a narrower palate and a smaller lower jaw, which can cause overcrowding of the teeth. It is also possible that they develop lower facial muscle tone, droopier eyes, and less prominent cheekbones.
Sleeping with an open mouth also puts you at greater risk of tooth decay. The production of saliva decreases at night, increasing the risk of gingival inflammation, dry mouth, and cavities.
