skiNothing is more exhilarating than the rush of adrenaline as you go from the top of a snow-covered mountain and down its gentle slopes. Winter sports are a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but not at the expense of having a broken limb.

Know what is safe and what is not.

Before going up the slopes, you must put yourself in a certain mindset. This will give you the right mental conditioning and help you prepare for the activity.

Here are some things you must do:

  1. Check the skiing equipment that you will use. Make sure that each ski does not have signs of damage. Your ski poles should be straight and sturdy enough to bear your weight. Do not buy equipment if this is your first time. Many shops offer ski equipment and snowboard rentals, such as in Vail.
  2. Prepare your apparel and gear. You need skiing goggles and a helmet to protect your eyes and head. Gloves, ski boots, and a nice pair of pants and jacket will keep you warm during the activity.
  3. Always remember the safety rules. Review the different guidelines on stopping safely or giving way to other people who are also skiing in the area.

Condition yourself physically.

It is one thing to prepare mentally; preparing physically is a completely different matter. As you will be zigzagging through the snowy slopes, you need to condition the muscles on your lower legs to withstand the pressure.

  • A good 30 minutes of warm-up exercises should be enough to get blood circulating more efficiently.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated while skiing.

Respect other skiers.

The slope is not your own playground. Other skiers will be there to have fun, as well.

  • Do not be selfish in the slopes.
  • Give way to skiers who are moving in your direction.
  • Maintain a safe distance from beginning skiers, especially children.

Skiing is more fun when everyone has discipline while on the slopes. Your trip to a winter resort will be more memorable when you can go home in one piece.
