In recent months, a number of video tutorials on how to create Do-It-Yourself (DIY) braces have popped up on YouTube, Facebook, and other social media platforms. According to these videos, cheap elastic bands can be used to create devices that can close the gaps between teeth without using professionally administered braces. And the bad news is, young people are buying what these videos say.
What the Young People Say
Most of the video creators claimed that wearing elastic bands for at least a few weeks has helped them close their teeth gaps. They warned their viewers that the DIY procedure would hurt, especially in the first few days of wearing the elastic bands, but it would be worth it in the end. In addition, they only recommended the procedure to those who can’t afford to have their braces done by an orthodontist.
What the Dental Professionals Say
Because of this growing DIY braces trend, many dental professionals have issued severe warnings about it. Braces made with cheap elastic bands may cause permanent damage to the gums and lead to tooth loss. As a matter of fact, the use of elastics is an effective method of tooth extraction. Also, the cost of fixing the potential damage from the DIY procedure will be likely more expensive than getting braces from a professional orthodontist. Hence, it is not really advisable to use elastics for closing teeth gaps. As Dee Kay Dental and other NHS dentists in Gainsborough would always say, fixing teeth gaps and formation is something that should only be handled by dental professionals and not at home.
Though it looks like the trend doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, dental professionals hope that their continuous release of warnings can change the minds of the young people about this procedure. After all, the dentists and orthodontists only want the best for their patients.
